Doggy Doors for Sliding Doors

Doggy Doors for Sliding Doors

Shopping for a doggy door gets confusing fast. Flap sizes, glass panels, inserts, weather strips, tempered glass: every installer explains it differently, and half the advice online assumes you own a wooden back door in a country with winter. Here is the simplified version for a doggy door for sliding door homes in the UAE, in the order you actually make the decisions.

There are only three decisions. Pick the flap size your dog needs. Pick the fitting method: a replacement glass panel or a silicon-only insert. Make sure the gap gets sealed. Everything else is detail, and this guide covers the detail too.

Decision one: the flap size

Dog doors come in three sizes, and the measurements are the same wherever you buy:

Measure your dog standing: shoulder height and chest width, then add a few centimetres of clearance. The flap should let your dog walk through without ducking its head or squeezing its shoulders. Dogs between sizes go up a size, not down. A generous flap still seals. A tight flap gets forced and stops sealing, and then you have a draughty hole instead of a door.

Puppies complicate the maths. Size for the adult dog, not the puppy in front of you. A flap that looks oversized for an eight-week-old labrador will fit it perfectly at a year old, and you only want to do this job once.

Decision two: replacement panel or insert

The replacement glass panel is the standard method. Your sliding door’s glass comes out intact, a new panel goes in with the doggy door built into it, and the door looks factory-finished. Any flap size works, including Extra-large. This is the right choice when you own the property or when your dog needs a Large or Extra-large flap.

The insert is the renter’s method. A slim panel slides into the door track carrying the flap, fixed with silicon only. Nothing is drilled, nothing is cut, and at move-out it lifts out without a trace. It suits cats and small dogs: a Medium flap fits, but Large and Extra-large need the full panel.

So the decision is short. Big dog or owned home: replacement panel. Small dog and rented home: insert. Small dog and owned home: either, with the panel giving the cleaner finish.

If you are unsure which method your landlord allows, ask about the insert first. It is the smaller commitment: faster fitting, less disruption, and a removal measured in minutes. Many renters start with an insert and only consider a panel later, once they see how the household runs with a doggy door. Owners can skip the deliberation. The replacement panel is the finished article, and it is what most owned homes end up with.

Decision three: seal the gap

Whichever method you pick, the sliding door’s interlock gap needs a weather strip. The interlock is the overlap where the two door panels meet in the middle, and any pet door fitting disturbs it slightly. The strip runs the height of the joint and keeps heat and dust out.

Weather strips are sometimes included in the offer and sometimes added separately for AED 250. This is the one line item to confirm by name before installation day. A doggy door with an unsealed interlock hands your cooled air to the summer, which is an expensive way to save a small amount.

What the glass looks like afterwards

Replacement panels are made to order. The opening for the flap is cut before the glass is tempered, because tempered glass cannot be cut afterwards. Frames are powder-coated aluminium. Glass comes in gray, green, brown or blue reflective finishes, plus transparent.

An exact 100 percent colour match with your existing glass cannot be promised, since many UAE projects use exclusive glass batches. Expect it to be close. Slight colour variation between old and new glass is normal, and it stops registering after the first week. Nobody visits your home and notices the panel. They notice the dog coming and going on its own.

Double-glazed units follow the same method, with a sealed unit built around the flap frame. The principle does not change: cut before tempering, assemble, temper as one unit. If your sliding door is double-glazed, mention it at the survey so the panel is specified correctly from the start rather than discovered on installation day.

The renting question, answered plainly

Renters get doggy doors two ways. With a replacement panel, the original glass is removed intact and stored, then reinstalled at move-out, leaving the door exactly as it was. With an insert, nothing belonging to the landlord is touched at all, and removal takes minutes.

Which one your landlord accepts depends on the landlord. The insert is the easier conversation, because there is nothing to restore. The panel is the better long-term setup, because the finish is cleaner and any flap size works. Raise it before you book, not after the installer arrives.

That is the whole purchase in three decisions: size the flap, pick panel or insert, seal the gap. Browse the doggy door options for sliding doors, measure your dog, and book a survey. The complicated version of this guide does not exist, because there is nothing complicated left.

FAQ

What is a doggy door?

A doggy door is a pet door sized for dogs, fitted into a door or glass panel so the dog can go in and out on its own. For sliding doors it usually means a flap built into a replacement glass panel.

How do I choose the right size?

Dog doors come in Medium (23 by 35 cm), Large (28 by 45 cm) and Extra-large (36 by 65 cm). Measure your dog’s shoulder height and chest width standing, add clearance, and pick the size it passes through without ducking. Between sizes, go larger.

Should I get a replacement glass panel or an insert?

A replacement glass panel suits most owners and any dog size. A silicon-only insert suits renters with small dogs, since it never touches the frame and removes without a trace. Your dog’s size and your tenancy decide between them.

Will the installer cut my existing glass?

No. Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering. A new panel is made with the doggy door opening cut before tempering, then installed in place of your existing panel. The original glass is kept intact.

What is the weather strip I keep hearing about?

The weather strip seals the interlock gap where the sliding panels overlap. It is sometimes included and sometimes an AED 250 add-on. Confirm before installation day.

Can renters have a doggy door in a sliding door?

Yes. The original glass panel is removed intact and stored, then reinstalled at move-out. Alternatively, a silicon-only insert never alters the door at all and lifts out in minutes.

How long does the whole thing take?

The survey and the made-to-order panel take the most time. The on-site fitting usually takes a couple of hours.
