Dog Doors for Sliding Glass Doors

Dog Doors for Sliding Glass Doors

Most homes in the UAE open to the outside through a sliding glass door. The patio, the balcony, the garden: the sliding door is the route your dog already knows, and it is the door you slide open ten times a day. A dog door for sliding glass door installation hands that job back to your dog. It goes out when it wants, comes back in when it is done, and the house stays sealed in between.

The part that surprises most owners is the glass. Nobody touches your existing panel with a cutter. The installer measures your sliding door, a new glass panel is cut and tempered with the dog door built into it, and that new panel replaces your current one. Your original glass stays intact in storage, ready to go back in whenever you want it.

How the dog door sits in your sliding door

The finished job looks like your sliding door, minus a rectangle of glass near the bottom. The dog door frame sits inside the new glass panel, sealed around all four edges. From the garden you see a neat flap at dog height. From the living room you see the same door you have always had. The sliding action does not change, the lock does not change, and the handle stays where it is.

This method works on the sliding door types found across the Emirates: standard sliding doors, patio sliders, aluminium sliding doors and screen doors. The same approach fits French doors, fixed glass panels, double-glazed units and windows, so a sliding door is not a special case here. It is the most common case, and the one installers handle most often.

Dog door sizes in M, L and XL

Dog doors come in three sizes, and the right one depends on your dog’s height at the shoulder and width at the chest:

Measure your dog standing, add a few centimetres of clearance, and pick the size it can pass through without ducking or squeezing. When a dog sits between two sizes, the larger flap is the safer pick. A flap with generous clearance still seals shut. A flap that fits too tight gets shouldered open and stops sealing, which lets heat and dust in around the edges.

Why your existing glass is never cut

Glass in a sliding door is tempered safety glass. Once tempered, it cannot be cut or drilled. Any attempt shatters the whole panel. That is why every professional installation starts with a new panel. The glazier cuts the opening before tempering, the dog door frame goes in during assembly, and the finished panel is tempered as one unit.

The new panel matches your door as closely as the glass market allows. Frames are powder-coated aluminium, and the glass comes in gray, green, brown or blue reflective finishes, plus transparent. An exact colour match with your existing glass cannot be promised, because many UAE projects use exclusive glass batches, but the difference is usually slight. Slight colour variation between old and new glass is normal, and most owners stop noticing it within a week.

The gap between the sliding doors, sealed

A sliding door has two panels that overlap in the middle, called the interlock. When a dog door goes into one panel, that overlap needs a weather strip to keep heat and dust out. The strip runs the height of the interlock and closes the gap the installation creates.

Weather strips are sometimes included in the installation offer and sometimes added as a separate item for AED 250. Either way, ask for it by name before installation day. A dog door without a sealed interlock lets the UAE summer straight into your living room, which defeats the point of the job.

What installation day looks like

A survey comes first. The installer visits, measures the sliding door, checks the frame, confirms the dog door size and the glass finish, and notes anything unusual: a double-glazed unit, an extra-thick frame, a non-standard track. Then the new panel is made to order. It is cut, assembled with the dog door, tempered and delivered.

On installation day the old panel comes out, the new panel goes in, the weather strip is fitted along the interlock, and the dog door is tested. The on-site part usually takes a couple of hours. Your original glass is handed to you for storage. Renters keep it for move-out day, when the original panel goes back in and the landlord sees the door exactly as it was.

If a sliding-door dog door is the missing piece in your home, the next step is a measurement. Look through the dog door options for sliding glass doors, pick your size, and book a survey. Most dogs learn the flap within days, and the door you used to open ten times a day starts opening itself.

FAQ

Can a dog door be fitted into a sliding glass door without cutting the glass?

Yes. The existing glass is never cut. A new glass panel is made with the dog door built into it, then installed in place of your current panel. Your original glass is kept intact and can go back in at any time.

What size dog door does my dog need?

Dog doors come in Medium (23 by 35 cm), Large (28 by 45 cm) and Extra-large (36 by 65 cm). Measure your dog standing at the shoulder and across the chest, add a few centimetres of clearance, and choose the size it can pass through without ducking. When your dog sits between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Will the new glass match my existing sliding door?

It will be close. Frames are powder-coated aluminium and the glass comes in gray, green, brown or blue reflective finishes, plus transparent. An exact 100 percent match cannot be promised because many UAE projects use exclusive glass batches, but slight colour variation between old and new glass is normal and most owners stop noticing it within days.

Does the sliding door still lock and slide normally after installation?

Yes. The dog door sits inside the replacement glass panel, so the track, the handle and the lock all work exactly as before. The sliding action does not change.

What is the weather strip for, and is it included?

The weather strip seals the interlock gap where the two sliding panels overlap, keeping heat and dust out. It is sometimes included in the installation offer and sometimes added separately for AED 250. Ask for it by name before installation day.

How long does installation take?

The survey and the made-to-order glass panel take the most time, since the panel is cut, assembled with the dog door and tempered before delivery. The on-site installation itself usually takes a couple of hours: the old panel comes out, the new panel goes in, the weather strip is fitted and the flap is tested.

I rent my villa. Can I still get a dog door in the sliding door?

Yes. Your original glass panel is removed intact and handed to you for storage. When you move out, it goes back into the frame and the door looks exactly as it did on move-in day.
