Sliding doors are the most common doors in Abu Dhabi homes. Villas open to gardens through them, apartments open to balconies through them, and townhouses use them for courtyards. Putting a cat flap into a sliding door is the single most requested job we do in the capital, and it is a job with a right way and a wrong way.
The right way is a new sliding panel. We fabricate a replacement panel with the flap opening cut before the glass is tempered, then swap it for your existing panel. The door keeps sliding, locking and sealing exactly as before. Your existing glass is never cut. Here is how sliding door cat flaps work, what seals the gaps, and what to expect.

Why Sliding Doors Need a New Panel
A sliding door panel is a finished unit. The glass is tempered, the frame is sealed, and the rollers are set for its exact weight. There is no version of cutting into it on site that ends well. Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering, so anyone offering to cut your fitted panel is offering to shatter it.
The new panel we build is a proper replacement. It matches the original panel’s dimensions, runs in the same track, and carries the same locking hardware. The only difference is the flap opening near the bottom, framed in powder-coated aluminium and sealed into the glass. When the swap is done, the door looks like it was always made this way.
Your original panel is lifted out intact and handed back to you. Store it flat somewhere safe. If you move out or sell the villa, the original panel goes back in and the door is exactly as the landlord or buyer expects.
The Interlock Gap and How We Seal It
Sliding doors have a detail that fixed doors do not. Where the two panels meet and overlap, there is an interlock channel. When one panel is replaced with a new one, the overlap at that junction can leave a narrow gap. Left open, the gap lets in dust, warm air and insects, which defeats the purpose of a sealed home.
We close the gap with a weather strip fitted along the interlock. The strip compresses when the door closes and releases when it slides, so the door keeps moving freely while the seal stays tight. Some installations include the weather strip in the standard work. On others it is an add-on of AED 250, depending on the door profile. We tell you which applies when we measure, before anything is ordered.
This is a small part of the job and an important one. A sliding door cat flap that leaks dust is a failed installation no matter how neat the flap looks. We check the interlock seal on every sliding door before we leave.
Where the Flap Sits in the Panel
The flap goes low in the panel, at cat height. For most cats that means the bottom of the flap opening sits a few centimetres above the track. The cat steps through without jumping, which matters for older cats and kittens. The opening is cut to the flap’s exact dimensions, so regular and large manual flaps and microchip flaps all fit. Cats over 4.5 kilograms need the large size, and we confirm that against your cat before ordering.
The flap frame is powder-coated aluminium, matched to your door frame as closely as possible. The glass comes in reflective gray, green, brown or blue, or transparent. A slight colour variation against the fixed panel beside it is normal. Glass that has sat in the UAE sun for years cannot be matched 100 percent, and we say that upfront rather than promising what no supplier can deliver.
Balconies, Patios and Courtyards
In Al Raha and on Yas Island, the sliding door usually leads to a balcony. A cat flap there gives an apartment cat outdoor time without an open door. The balcony should have a safe railing and some shade, and the flap turns the space into a part-time catio. Microchip flaps are popular for balconies in buildings where neighbouring cats roam the terraces.
In Khalifa City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, the sliding door leads to the garden. Here the flap is about freedom. The cat patrols the garden, naps in the sun, and comes back into the air conditioning when the heat builds. Manual flaps suit homes without stray problems. Microchip flaps suit homes where community cats visit.
Al Reef townhouses often have sliding doors to small rear courtyards. The setup is compact, the flap is close to the living areas, and cats take to it immediately because the outdoor space is visible through the glass.
What Installation Day Looks Like
The visit is a swap, not a construction project. We lift out your existing sliding panel and set it aside. The new panel goes into the track, the rollers are adjusted, and the lock is tested. The flap is already secured in its opening from the workshop, so on site we check its swing, fit the interlock weather strip, and test the full slide and lock cycle.
Then comes the cat. Some cats walk through within minutes, drawn by the sight of the garden through the flap. Nervous cats need the flap propped open for a day or two so they learn the route first. We show you the prop trick, the cleaning routine for the flap, and how the weather strip should look when the door is closed. The visit usually takes under two hours.

FAQ
Can a cat flap go into a sliding glass door?
Yes. We fabricate a new sliding panel with the flap opening built in. The door keeps sliding and locking exactly as before, and the flap sits in the replacement panel.
Do you cut the existing sliding panel?
The sliding panel is replaced, not modified. We build a new tempered panel with the flap opening cut before tempering, swap it for your existing panel, and you keep the original.
What is the interlock gap and how is it sealed?
Where the two sliding panels overlap there is an interlock, and that junction sometimes needs a weather strip to keep out dust and warm air. Some installations include it, and on others it is an add-on of AED 250. We confirm which at the measurement visit.
Will the door still slide smoothly?
The new panel is made to the same dimensions as your old one and runs in the same track, so the sliding action is unchanged. The flap adds no weight the rollers cannot handle.
Does the flap compromise the door’s seal against dust?
No. The flap frame is powder-coated aluminium, sealed into the panel the same way a factory panel would be. The interlock weather strip keeps the sliding junction dust-tight, so the door seals as well as it did before.
Which flap sizes fit a sliding door panel?
The opening is cut to the flap’s dimensions, so regular and large manual flaps and microchip flaps all fit. Cats over 4.5 kilograms need the large size.
