Pet Doors for Sliding Glass Doors in Sharjah

Pet Doors for Sliding Glass Doors in Sharjah

The sliding glass door is the heart of the Sharjah villa. It is the wall between the living room and the garden, the source of the light, and the door the pets stare through all day. Owners want a pet door in it without replacing the door, without breaking the way it slides, and without a panel that looks like an afterthought. All of that is achievable, because a professional pet door installation works with the sliding door rather than against it.

There are two routes, and the survey decides between them. The pet door can go into the sliding panel itself, or into the fixed glass panel beside it. Either way the method is the same: a new tempered glass panel is made with the flap opening formed in the factory, then fitted into the existing frame. The frame is never cut and the door keeps sliding on its original track.

The two fitting routes

Fitting into the sliding panel puts the flap where the household traffic already flows. The cat or dog learns the route fast because it is the door they already use. The trade-off is that the moving panel carries the flap, so the cut-out has to be positioned where it never clashes with the handle, the lock or the track.

Fitting into the fixed panel beside the door leaves the sliding mechanism completely untouched. The door opens, closes and locks exactly as the manufacturer intended, and the pet gets a dedicated panel of its own. For XL dog doors this is usually the recommended route, because a large flap in a moving panel adds weight and swing exactly where you least want it.

The interlock gap and weather strips

Every sliding door has an interlock gap, the vertical joint where the sliding panel meets the fixed panel when the door is closed. It is a working joint, not a sealed one, and it is where dust creeps in during a shamal and where cooled air quietly escapes all summer. A pet door installation is the right moment to deal with it, because the team is already working on the door.

Weather strips seal that gap. They are slim brush or pile strips that close the joint without stopping the door from sliding. Sometimes they are included in the installation and sometimes they are an AED 250 add-on, depending on the door and the scope of the job. Confirm it at the survey so there are no surprises on fitting day.

Glass facts every owner should know

Existing glass can never be cut. Tempered glass shatters if a blade touches it after tempering, so the only professional method is a new panel, cut and tempered in the factory with the pet door opening formed first. Double-glazed units follow the same rule, with the opening formed before the unit is sealed.

The new panel will not be a 100% match for the old glass, and you should expect that honestly. Slight colour variation is normal, particularly with tinted glass. Frames are powder-coated aluminium, which takes the colour well, and reflective glass comes in gray, green, brown and blue as well as transparent. Many projects use an exclusive glass for the new panel rather than chasing an exact match, and once it is fitted the difference is barely noticeable.

The rental-friendly version

Renters in Sharjah get pet doors in sliding doors too, through silicon-only inserts. The new panel is bedded in silicon without screws or fixings into the frame, so there is no damage to repair later. After removal the silicon leaves no trace, which makes the whole installation invisible to the landlord.

You keep the original glass panel, stored safely for the day you move out, when it goes straight back into the frame. For the full rental picture, our pet door installation in Sharjah page explains how the glass swap works for tenants from survey to move-out.

Sliding doors across Sharjah homes

We fit pet doors into sliding doors across Sharjah, from the wide garden sliders of villas in Masaar and Al Tai to townhouse doors in Tilal City and apartment balcony doors in Muwaileh and Al Hamriyah. Panel sizes and track profiles differ between developments, which is why the survey measures your actual door instead of working from a standard size.

French, patio and aluminium doors

Sliding doors get the attention, but they are not the only glazed doors in Sharjah homes. French doors with full-length glass panels take pet doors the same way, with the flap fitted into a new tempered panel in one of the door leaves. Patio doors follow the same method. The principle never changes: the frame is untouched, and a new panel carries the flap.

Aluminium doors with glazed sections need a closer look at the survey, because the glazed area has to be wide enough for the cut-out. Where the glazing is generous, the result is identical to a sliding door installation. Screen doors are the lightweight alternative: a flap in the screen mesh gives the pet its route while the mesh keeps insects out, which suits the cooler months when doors stand open for airflow. Whatever the door type, the glass rule holds, and that is why the survey measures the real door in front of it.

FAQ

Can you cut a pet door into my existing sliding door glass?

No, and neither can anyone else. Existing glass can never be cut, because cutting tempered glass shatters it. The professional method is a new panel, cut in the factory and tempered, with the pet door opening formed before tempering.

Will my sliding door still slide after a pet door is fitted?

Yes. The new panel sits in the same track as the old one, and the frame, rollers and lock are untouched. If the flap goes into the fixed panel beside the door, the sliding panel is not involved at all.

What is the interlock gap on a sliding door?

It is the vertical joint where the sliding panel meets the fixed panel when the door is closed. Even with the door shut, this joint can let in dust and draughts, and weather strips are the fix that seals it.

Do weather strips cost extra?

Sometimes they are included with the installation and sometimes they are an AED 250 add-on, depending on the door and the scope of the job. Ask at the survey so it is confirmed in writing before fitting day.

Is a sliding door pet door suitable for renters?

Yes. Rental-friendly silicon-only inserts hold the panel without damaging the frame, and they are invisible after removal. You keep the original glass and it goes back in when you move out.

Should the pet door go in the sliding panel or the fixed panel?

Both work. The sliding panel keeps the flap where the traffic already is, while the fixed panel leaves the moving door completely untouched. For large dog doors the fixed panel is usually the better choice.

Will the new glass match my existing glass?

It is matched as closely as possible, but glass is never a 100% match. Slight colour variation between the new panel and the old glass is normal, especially with tinted or reflective glass, and many projects simply use an exclusive glass for the new panel.
