The two sizes

Regular and large, side by side.

This is the whole decision. Everything else is detail.

At exactly 4.5 kg, choose large. A flap that is slightly roomy is fine. One that pinches the shoulders teaches your cat to avoid it.
Measure first

Weigh your cat before you pick a size.

Guessing is how flaps end up too small.

The kitchen-scale method

Weigh yourself holding the cat, then weigh yourself without the cat. The difference is the cat's weight. Your vet's last visit weight works too. What matters is a real number, not a guess based on how the cat looks, because long fur and big bones fool everyone.

Placement

The bottom of the flap should sit at belly height.

Even the right size feels wrong when it is mounted too high or too low.

Large size cat flap at belly height for a big cat

Step through, not jump or crouch

We position the flap so your cat walks through at a natural stride. Too high and the cat jumps every time. Too low and a big cat crouches and scrapes its back. Belly height keeps the daily routine comfortable, which is what keeps a cautious cat using the flap.

Manual or microchip

The sizes are the same either way.

Both flap types come in regular and large. The choice between them is about who gets in, not how big the hole is.

Manual flap

Your cat pushes the flap open. Simple, and fine when no strange cats visit your door. See cat flaps.

Microchip flap

Reads your cat's implanted chip and opens only for your cat. Blocks strange and aggressive cats that follow yours home. See microchip cat flaps.

Same sizing rule

Cats over 4.5 kg need the large, whichever type you choose. Size to the larger cat when you have more than one.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Straight answers about this page's topic.

How do I know if my cat needs a large flap?+

Weigh them. Over 4.5 kg means large, no matter how the cat looks. Long fur and big bones make visual guesses unreliable.

My cat is exactly 4.5 kg. Which one?+

Large. A flap that is slightly roomy is fine; one that pinches the shoulders teaches your cat to avoid it.

Can a small cat use a large flap?+

Yes. The opening is bigger, but your cat pushes it the same way. If you want only your cat to use it, choose a microchip flap, which reads your cat's implanted chip.

Do microchip flaps come in both sizes?+

Yes, regular and large, exactly like the manual flaps. The sizing rule is the same: cats over 4.5 kg need the large.

Will a large manual flap let stray cats in?+

A manual flap cannot tell cats apart, and a larger opening is easier for any cat to use. If strange or aggressive cats visit, the microchip version reads your cat's implanted chip and keeps the rest out.

I have two cats of different sizes.+

Size the flap for the larger cat. The smaller one will use a large flap without trouble.
