What Size Dog Door for a Beagle?

RIGHT SIZE FOR YOUR BEAGLE

A Large dog door, with a flap measuring 28 by 45 cm, is the right size for almost every Beagle. Beagles stand 33 to 41 cm at the shoulder and weigh 9 to 16 kg, which puts them squarely inside the Large range. The Medium flap (23 by 35 cm) is a squeeze for this breed, and Beagles are famous for refusing to do something uncomfortable twice. Our full dog door size guide compares every size we fit, but for a Beagle the answer rarely changes.

Why Large Works for a Beagle

Beagles are short-legged but stocky. Their broad chest and sturdy frame mean they need width more than height. The Large flap gives them 28 cm of width to push through and 45 cm of height, which leaves a few centimetres of clearance above the withers so the flap brushes the back instead of pinching it.

On a Medium flap, a full-grown Beagle has to angle their shoulders and drag their belly. Some dogs tolerate that for a while. A Beagle will not. Once a Beagle decides the door is a bad deal, it will stand by the glass and howl instead of pushing through. Sizing up to Large avoids that standoff entirely.

We do not install a Small size at all. It is too small for comfort for any dog we work with, and a Beagle would get stuck at the shoulders in one.

A Beagle’s Nose Runs the Show

Everything a Beagle does starts at the nose. This is a scent hound built to follow trails for hours, and that single-mindedness shapes how they use a dog door. If something interesting is happening in the garden, a Beagle will charge through the flap with total commitment. If nothing smells worth investigating, it may ignore the door for days. That is a Beagle doing exactly what Beagles do.

The flip side of this nose-driven focus is stubbornness. Beagles lock onto a decision and hold it. If the first experience with the flap is unpleasant, too tight, too stiff, or pushed from behind by a well-meaning owner, the dog files it under “never again” and training takes twice as long. For this breed, getting the size right from day one decides whether the door gets used at all.

The good news is that Beagles are deeply food-motivated. The nose that causes the stubbornness is also the tool that fixes it. A trail of treats does more for Beagle door training than any amount of coaxing.

How to Measure Your Beagle

Stand your Beagle square on all four paws on a flat floor. Measure from the floor to the top of the shoulder blades, the withers, not the top of the head. Most Beagles measure 33 to 41 cm here. Next, wrap a tape measure around the widest part of the chest and note the number.

For the Large flap, the top of the opening should sit roughly 5 cm above your dog’s shoulder height. The step-over, the bottom edge of the flap above the floor, should stay low, because Beagles are low to the ground and should not have to hoist themselves over a high threshold. A tall step-over on a short-legged dog leads to hesitation, and hesitation with a Beagle turns into a permanent opinion.

Measure at home and write both numbers down. We confirm measurements on installation day before anything is fitted, so a few centimetres of error at home is not a problem.

Fitting the Door Into Your Glass

We fit PetSafe Freedom aluminium dog doors into glass sliding doors, French doors, patio doors, aluminium doors and screen doors. The existing glass is never cut. Instead, a new tempered glass panel is manufactured with the dog door cutout built in, and that panel replaces the original pane.

For renters, we also offer rental-friendly insert panels that sit inside the door frame without altering the original glass at all, so you can take the door with you when you move.

We install across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah. For a quote, head to our contact page and tell us your door type and your dog’s breed.

Training Your Beagle to Use the Flap

Start with the flap held fully open. Lay a short trail of small treats from inside the house through the opening into the garden, so the nose does the teaching. Let your Beagle walk through at its own pace. Do not push the dog through, and do not hold the flap while the dog is mid-push. One surprise shove can undo a week of progress with this breed.

Once the dog walks through the open frame confidently, lower the flap halfway and repeat the treat trail. Then let the flap close fully and smear a little peanut butter on the flap itself so the nose pushes it open. Beagles learn the connection between flap and interesting smells fast, often within a few short sessions.

Keep sessions under five minutes and always end on a success. A Beagle that is still having fun will want another go. A bored Beagle has already stopped listening.

FAQ

Will my Beagle actually use a dog door?

Almost certainly, once it learns that pushing the flap leads to smells worth investigating. The training hurdle with Beagles is not the door itself but the first impression. Get the size right and train with treats, and the nose takes over.

My Beagle is on the small side, 33 cm at the shoulder. Is Large too big?

No. Large fits the full Beagle range from 33 to 41 cm. Extra room means comfort. A flap that is slightly generous is used happily for years; a flap that is slightly tight is abandoned in a week.

Can the door go in a glass sliding door?

Yes. We manufacture a new tempered glass panel with the cutout built in, so the original glass is never cut or weakened.

I rent my villa. Can I still get a dog door?

Yes. Rental-friendly insert panels fit inside the frame without changing the original glass, and you can take the door with you when you move out.

Will my Beagle chew the flap?

Adult Beagles rarely do, but puppies chew everything. The PetSafe Freedom frame is aluminium and stands up to far more than a teething puppy. Supervise young dogs around the door the way you would around anything new.
