Large Dog Doors in Dubai for Big Breeds

Large Dog Doors in Dubai for Big Breeds

Dubai’s villa communities are full of big dogs. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds are everywhere in Damac Hills 1, Tilal Al Ghaf, and the larger villa developments, because the gardens are finally big enough for them. A big dog with a small dog door is a problem. The dog scrapes through, the flap wears out, and eventually the dog gives up and goes back to barking at the patio door. Large breeds need the XL dog door, and the XL needs to be fitted properly.

An XL dog door measures 34.9×60.3cm. That is a serious opening, and it changes the installation. The glass panel has to be manufactured with a large cut-out, the flap has to be sturdy enough for a 30kg dog hitting it at speed, and the seal has to close reliably after every pass. This article covers sizing for large breeds, the glass work, flap durability, and what to check before you book.

We install XL dog doors across Dubai as part of our dog door installation in Dubai service, sized to your dog and fitted into glass, sliding, and aluminium doors.

Which dogs need the XL door

The XL dog door at 34.9×60.3cm suits dogs of Labrador size. That includes Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Boxers, and similar large breeds. The large door at 26.0×41.3cm, which suits Beagle sized dogs, is too small for these breeds. A Labrador trying to use a large door has to crouch and twist, and many simply refuse.

Measure the dog, not the breed standard. Shoulder height comes first. It is the distance from the floor to the top of the shoulders with the dog standing square. Chest width is second, measured at the widest point of the torso. The flap opening should clear both with several centimetres to spare. A deep-chested breed like a Boxer can need the XL on width even if its height suggests otherwise.

Weight is a useful cross-check. Dogs over 25kg almost always need the XL. Between 15 and 25kg, measure carefully, because this is the range where a leggy dog needs the XL and a compact dog fits the large. Puppies of large breeds should be sized for the adult dog. A Labrador puppy reaches near-adult size within a year, and installing a smaller door first means paying for the job twice.

The glass panel and the big opening

An XL opening in glass is a structural question, not just a cutting question. The opening is 36cm wide and 65cm tall, plus the mounting frame around it. The remaining glass around the opening has to be wide enough to stay strong after tempering. Narrow sidelights and divided panels often cannot take it.

The survey is where this gets decided. We measure the available glass in each candidate panel and check the opening against the flap’s required cut-out plus the minimum glass border. Sliding patio doors in Dubai villas usually have generous glass areas and take the XL well. French doors with wide leaves work too. Fixed full-height panels beside the main door are often the best option, because they offer the largest uninterrupted glass.

As with every glass installation in Dubai, the existing glass can never be cut. The panel is manufactured new with the XL opening in it, tempered, and built as a double-glazed sealed unit where the original was double-glazed. The bigger the opening, the more important the tempering, because the panel has to handle both the structural load and a large dog pushing through the flap daily.

Flap durability for heavy dogs

A 30kg Labrador does not tiptoe through a dog door. It barges. The flap for an XL door has to survive that, thousands of times, in Dubai heat. The flaps we fit for large breeds use thicker flexible panels with reinforced edges. The hinge or flexible top mount is rated for the weight of the flap plus the force of a big dog.

The closing mechanism matters as much as the flap. After a big dog passes, the flap has to swing back and seal. Weighted bottoms and magnetic edges do this reliably. A flap that hangs half-open after the dog goes through is worse than no flap at all in August, because it becomes a permanent vent. We test the close on every installation with a firm push, simulating the dog, and check that the flap seats fully.

Wear parts are replaceable. The flap panel itself is the part that takes the beating, and it can be swapped without touching the glass or the frame. Ask us about the replacement flap for your unit at installation, so you know the part exists when you need it in a few years.

Training a large breed to use the door

Large breeds usually learn dog doors fast. Labradors and Goldens are food-motivated and confident, which is the ideal combination. The method is the same as for smaller dogs, scaled up. Tape the flap fully open so the opening is just a hole. Lure the dog through with treats. Let the dog use it freely for a day. Then tape the flap halfway, so the dog has to nudge it with its nose. Then let it close fully.

Most large breeds are pushing through confidently by day two or three. The one mistake to avoid is the weight of the flap startling a nervous dog. If your dog is timid, keep the flap taped open longer and progress slowly. A frightened large dog that decides the flap is scary is harder to retrain than a small one, simply because you cannot easily guide 30kg of reluctant dog.

Multi-dog households with mixed sizes should size for the largest dog. A Beagle and a Labrador sharing a villa need the XL door. The Beagle will use it happily, and the Labrador will fit. One door, sized once, serves the whole pack.

Security, sealing, and daily life

An XL opening raises the security question more than smaller doors, because the hole is bigger. The facts are reassuring. A 34.9×60.3cm opening does not admit a person. The flap units include a rigid slide-in security panel. This is a solid insert that drops into the frame and closes the opening completely. Slide it in at night, when you travel, or any time you want the door solid.

Sealing follows the same principles as smaller doors. The flap closes with a weighted magnetic seal. The glass panel is double-glazed where the original was double-glazed. On sliding doors, the interlock gap gets weather strips, included in some offers and an AED 250 add-on in others. The insulation performance of the door stays close to original.

In daily life, the XL door changes the routine for big-dog owners. The dog goes to the garden when it needs to, which means fewer accidents with older dogs, faster house training with puppies, and an end to the 6am wake-up bark at the patio door. For owners in villa communities with large plots, where the garden is the dog’s real territory, the door simply connects the two spaces the dog already thinks of as home.

FAQ

What size is an XL dog door, and which breeds does it suit?

The XL dog door measures 34.9×60.3cm and suits dogs of Labrador size, including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and similar large breeds. Measure your dog’s shoulder height and chest width. If the dog clears those dimensions comfortably, the XL is right.

Will an XL dog door fit my villa’s door?

It needs a wide glass panel. The opening is 34.9×60.3cm plus the frame around it, so narrow sidelights cannot take it. The survey measures your door’s available glass and confirms whether the XL fits or whether a neighbouring panel is better.

Can you cut an XL opening into my existing glass?

No. Villa door glass is tempered and often double-glazed, and existing glass can never be cut. We manufacture a new panel with the XL opening pre-cut, temper it, and fit it in place of the existing one. You keep the original glass.

How long does an XL dog door installation take?

Most XL installations take one to two hours on site. Because the opening is large, the panel is almost always made to order, so expect a survey visit first and an installation visit second.

Does a big dog door waste a lot of air conditioning?

The flap uses a weighted and magnetic seal that closes after the dog passes. The panel is double-glazed where the original was double-glazed. The insulation loss is small, and far less than opening the patio door for the dog all day.

Can the XL dog door be locked at night?

Yes. Most dog door units include a rigid slide-in security panel. Slide it into the frame at night or when you travel, and the opening is closed completely. The flap sizes do not admit a person.
