Dog Doors for Sliding Doors in Ras Al Khaimah

Dog Doors for Sliding Doors in Ras Al Khaimah

Sliding doors dominate Ras Al Khaimah homes. Villa patio doors in Al Hamra Village, terrace doors in Mina Al Arab, balcony doors in Julphar apartments. When a dog owner in RAK wants a dog door, it almost always goes into a sliding door. The method is specific, and getting it right is what separates a clean installation from a draughty one.

We replace the sliding panel with a new tempered panel that carries the dog door. The door keeps sliding, locking and sealing as before. Your existing panel is never cut and is returned to you intact. Here is how sliding door dog doors work, from sizing to the interlock seal.

The Panel Swap Method

A sliding panel is a finished unit with tempered glass, sealed edges and rollers set for its weight. Cutting into it on site is not possible. Tempered glass shatters when cut after tempering. The correct method is to build a complete replacement panel in the workshop, with the dog door opening cut before the glass is tempered, then swap it for the existing panel.

The replacement matches the original panel’s dimensions exactly. It runs in the same track, on the same rollers, with the same lock. The dog door sits low in the panel at the dog’s height, framed in powder-coated aluminium and sealed into the glass. After the swap, the door looks factory made.

Your original panel lifts out whole and is handed back to you. Keep it stored flat. If you sell the villa or change your mind, the original panel refits and the door is exactly as it was.

Sizing the Dog Door in a Sliding Panel

The opening is cut to the dog door’s dimensions, so all three sizes fit sliding panels. Medium at 23 by 35 centimetres suits a French Bulldog. Large at 28 by 45 centimetres suits a Beagle. Extra large at 36 by 65 centimetres suits a Labrador. The panel is engineered around the cut-out so the glass stays strong, which is why larger doors need more careful fabrication.

We measure the dog before ordering. Shoulder height decides the flap height, chest width decides the flap width, and we add a comfortable margin. For puppies we size for the adult dog. A panel ordered too small is an expensive mistake, because the whole panel has to be remade.

Position matters too. The flap sits low enough for the dog to step through without jumping, which protects older dogs’ joints. In villas where the patio is a step down from the interior, we account for the threshold height so the flap lines up with where the dog actually walks.

The Interlock Gap, Sealed Properly

Every sliding door has an interlock, the channel where the two panels overlap when the door is closed. When one panel is replaced, the overlap at that junction can leave a narrow gap. In RAK’s dusty months, an unsealed gap lets fine dust drift in around the new panel, and cooled air drifts out.

We fit a weather strip along the interlock to close the gap. The strip compresses as the door closes and releases as it slides, so the door keeps moving freely while the seal stays tight. On some doors the strip is covered by the standard installation. On others it is an add-on of AED 250, depending on the door profile and the strip required. We state which applies at the measurement visit, before anything is ordered.

We check this seal on every sliding door before leaving. A dog door installation that leaks dust has failed no matter how good the flap looks. The check takes a minute. A dusty living room lasts for years.

Keeping the Climate Out

The dog door flap itself seals with a magnetic or weighted edge that holds it flat against the frame. When the dog is not passing through, the flap is a closed, sealed panel. Dust, sand and insects stay outside. Cooled air stays inside. This is what makes a proper dog door different from a hole with a curtain.

The glass panel comes in reflective gray, green, brown or blue, or transparent, matched as closely as possible to your existing door. The frame is powder-coated aluminium, built for sun and coastal air. A slight colour variation against the fixed panel is normal. Glass that has weathered for years cannot be matched 100 percent, and we set that expectation before ordering.

For double-glazed sliding doors, common in newer RAK builds, we fabricate a new double-glazed unit with the dog door opening cut before the panes are sealed. The insulation survives the conversion, which matters when the glass is working against the summer heat all day.

Training and Installation Day

Dogs learn these doors fast because the reward is visible. The garden is right there through the glass. Prop the flap open, lure the dog through with food, and repeat until the route is routine. Then let the flap fall so the dog learns the push. Most dogs have it within a day. Timid dogs get the propped-open stage for as long as they need it.

Installation day is a swap. The old panel comes out, the new panel goes into the track, rollers and lock are adjusted and tested, and the interlock weather strip is fitted. We run the full slide and lock cycle several times, check the flap swing, and show you the cleaning routine. The visit usually takes a few hours, and the dog can start training the same evening.

Once the dog is confident, the door needs no further attention beyond an occasional wipe of the flap seal to keep it seating flat.

FAQ

How does a dog door fit a sliding door?

We fabricate a new sliding panel with the dog door opening built in, then swap it for your existing panel. The door slides, locks and seals exactly as before.

Can you cut the dog door into my current sliding panel?

No. Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering. We build a new panel with the opening cut before tempering, and your original panel is returned to you intact.

What is the interlock and why does it need sealing?

It is the channel where the two sliding panels overlap. That junction sometimes needs a weather strip to stay dust-tight. Some installations include it, on others it is an add-on of AED 250.

Do all three dog door sizes fit sliding doors?

Yes. The opening is cut to the door’s dimensions before tempering, so medium, large and extra large dog doors all fit sliding panels. We confirm the fit against your dog’s measurements.

Will the heavier panel affect how the door slides?

The replacement panel matches your original panel’s dimensions and runs in the same track on the same rollers. The dog door adds no meaningful weight, so the sliding action is unchanged.

Does the installation affect my air conditioning?

The flap seals magnetically against its frame, and the interlock weather strip seals the panel junction. Together they keep the cooled air in and the dust out.
